Key Facts
Where the Mountains Say Hello!
Dixville Notch is a super special place tucked away in the northern part of New Hampshire. It's like a secret hideout surrounded by tall mountains! The village itself is about 1,800 feet high, which is almost as tall as 18 giraffes stacked on top of each other! It's also close to Canada, just a short drive away. The air is fresh and clean up here, and the views are amazing.
Tiny Town, Big Votes!
This little village is famous for something really cool: voting! Dixville Notch is the very first place in the whole state to cast its votes in important elections, like when people choose a president. Even though only a few people live there, their votes are counted right away, and everyone watches to see what they decide. It's like being the first kid to answer a question in class!
A Place for Fun and Rest
Dixville Notch has a giant, fancy hotel called The Balsams. It's so big it sits on land that's like 3,000 football fields put together! In the summer, people come to play golf on beautiful green courses. When winter arrives, the snow makes it perfect for skiing down snowy hills. It's a place where people can relax and have lots of fun in nature.
Nature's Big Doorway
The name 'Dixville Notch' actually comes from a mountain pass nearby. A 'notch' is like a gap or a doorway between two mountains. This special doorway is between two big mountains, Dixville Peak and Sanguinary Mountain. It's so important because it helps decide which way the rivers flow. Some rivers go towards the Connecticut River, and others flow towards the Androscoggin River.
