People have been sending distress signals for a very long time! Long ago, they might have used smoke signals that looked like big puffs of smoke in the sky. Later, people started using bright flares that shoot up into the air, like a fiery exclamation point. These signals are designed to be seen or heard from far away, like a loud honk from a bus.

Distress signals are like a superhero's call for backup! They tell people that someone is in serious danger and needs help right away.
