When Did Things Start Spreading?

People have seen diffusion for ages, but they didn't always know what it was! It's like seeing a ball roll downhill without knowing about gravity. Scientists started really studying it a long time ago.

In the 1800s, a scientist named Robert Brown noticed tiny specks of pollen jiggling around in water. He didn't know why, but we now know it was because of water molecules bumping into them! This movement is called Brownian motion, and it's a big part of diffusion.

Why Does Spreading Matter So Much?

Diffusion is super important for life! Think about your body. When you breathe in, oxygen diffuses from your lungs into your blood.

Then, your blood carries it everywhere your body needs it. When you eat, tiny food bits diffuse from your tummy into your body. It's also how plants get the air they need to grow!

Without diffusion, nothing could move around inside living things, and we wouldn't be able to survive. It’s a silent helper in our bodies!

How Does the Spreading Happen?

Everything is made of tiny, tiny pieces called molecules, and they are always moving! Even if something looks still, its molecules are wiggling and jiggling. When there are lots of molecules in one spot, they bump into each other and spread out into emptier spaces.

It's like a crowded party where people naturally move to less crowded areas. This natural movement from crowded to less crowded places is what diffusion is all about. It keeps going until everything is spread out evenly.
