Key Facts
What Was Democratic Kampuchea?
Democratic Kampuchea was the name of a country called Cambodia for a short time, from 1976 to 1979. It was led by a group called the Khmer Rouge, and their leader was Pol Pot. They took over the capital city, Phnom Penh, in 1975. This was a big change because they stopped the old government. It was a very difficult period for the people living there.
A Time of Big Changes
The Khmer Rouge wanted to change everything about Cambodia. They made people leave their homes and move to the countryside to work on farms. They believed this would make the country strong. But sadly, many people got sick, were very hungry, or were treated very badly. It was a time when life became very hard for millions of people.
When Did It End?
The Khmer Rouge's rule ended in 1979. This happened when soldiers from a neighboring country, Vietnam, came and took control of Phnom Penh. The Khmer Rouge leaders had to leave. Even though they left the main country, they still tried to have a government from far away for a while. It took many years for Cambodia to start healing.
