Key Facts
Where is This Icy Place?
Imagine a super cold ocean right at the bottom of the world, that's the Davis Sea! It's part of Antarctica, a giant continent covered in ice. This sea is like a big blue stripe along the icy coast. It's between two icy shelves, like giant frozen blankets. It's so far south, it's one of the coldest places on Earth. Brrr!
Who Found the Davis Sea?
Long, long ago, brave explorers in a ship called the Aurora sailed to this icy land. They were called the Australian Antarctic Expedition. One of the leaders, Sir Douglas Mawson, decided to name this sea after Captain John King Davis, who was the captain of their ship. So, the sea got its name from the people who discovered it!
What's Under the Water?
The Davis Sea can be very, very deep! It's as deep as a 4-story building is tall, which is super deep! Sometimes, there are islands nearby, like Drygalski Island, which is about as far as you might walk to school and back a few times. There are also rocks sticking out of the water, like Bigelow Rock. It's a wild and watery place!
Cool Facts About the Davis Sea
Did you know the Davis Sea is part of a place called East Antarctica? It's bordered by different coasts, like Princess Elizabeth Land and Queen Mary Land. There's even a research station called Mirny Station where scientists live and study the ice and animals. It's a place for science and adventure!
