Dall Sheep

Key Facts
Who Are the Dall Sheep?
Dall sheep are super cool wild sheep that live in the rocky, snowy mountains of northwestern North America. They have thick, white woolly coats to keep them warm in the freezing cold. The boys, called rams, have HUGE, curled horns that can weigh as much as a big dog! The girls, called ewes, have smaller, straighter horns. They are amazing climbers, leaping across steep cliffs like acrobats!
Where Do They Call Home?
These sheep love living way up high in the mountains, where it's cold and there aren't many trees. You can find them in places like Alaska, Canada's Yukon and Northwest Territories, and parts of British Columbia. They like rocky slopes and high meadows, which are perfect for spotting danger from far away and finding yummy plants to munch on. It's like their own private, super-high playground!
What's on the Menu?
Dall sheep are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. They love munching on grasses and special plants called sedges. In the summer, they eat fresh green leaves from bushes like willows. When they need extra minerals, they visit special spots called mineral licks to get important nutrients. It’s like they have a secret snack bar in the mountains!
Rams' Big Head-Butts!
When it's time for the boy sheep to show who's boss, they have epic head-butting contests! They run at each other and slam their big horns together. It sounds like thunder! These fights help them decide who is the strongest ram. They also use their horns to protect themselves from predators like wolves and bears. It’s a tough life in the mountains!
