Dachau liberation reprisals
Key Facts
What Happened When the Doors Opened?
On a very important day, April 29, 1945, soldiers from the United States army arrived at a place called Dachau concentration camp. This was a very sad and scary place where people were treated very badly. When the soldiers got there, they found many German SS guards.
Some of these guards were hurt or even killed by the American soldiers and by some of the people who had been kept prisoner there. It was a moment of intense anger and upset.
The Sad March Before Freedom
Just a few days before the soldiers arrived, the SS guards made about 7,000 prisoners go on a terrible 'death march.' This means they were forced to walk a long way, and sadly, many people died from being too cold, too tired, or because they were shot. When the American soldiers saw the piles of bodies and the awful conditions, they were shocked and very, very angry. It was like seeing a playground after a huge, unfair fight.
Why Were They So Mad?
The soldiers were furious because they saw how cruelly the prisoners had been treated. They found so many dead bodies and learned about the horrible death march. Some of the SS guards who were still there even fought back when the Americans arrived!
This made the soldiers even more upset. It’s like if someone was being mean to your friends, and you saw it, you’d want to help and might get angry too.
A Day to Remember
This event at Dachau is a part of history that shows how strong feelings can get when people see terrible things happening. The soldiers and prisoners were reacting to years of cruelty. It’s a reminder that even in war, there are moments when people’s emotions boil over because of what they’ve witnessed. It helps us understand that bad actions can lead to very strong reactions.
