Key Facts
A Sad Place in Germany
Dachau was a special kind of camp built a long, long time ago in Germany, near a town called Dachau. It was one of the very first camps like this that the Nazis, who were in charge of Germany then, built. It started in 1933, which is even before your parents or grandparents were born! It was built on land where old bombs used to be kept, which sounds a bit spooky.
Who Went to Dachau?
At first, the Nazis sent people to Dachau who didn't agree with them, like people who believed different things or wanted different leaders. But then, the camp got bigger, and more people were sent there. They sent people who were Jewish, or who were from a group called the Roma, and even people from Germany and other countries that Germany took over. It wasn't a nice place to be.
Life Was Very Hard
Life inside Dachau was very, very difficult. People were treated badly and were often hungry. They had to work a lot, and sometimes they were punished in ways that were very scary. Sadly, many people got sick and didn't get better. There were so many people who died there, it's hard to imagine. They even had special ovens to deal with the bodies.
What Happened After?
After the war ended, the soldiers who were in charge of the camp were put on trial. Later, the camp was used to help people who had to leave their homes. For a little while, American soldiers even used it as a base! Finally, the camp was closed down for good in 1960. Now, it's a place where people can learn about what happened there.
