Who Was This Explorer Guy?

Cristóbal Colón, or Christopher Columbus as some people call him, was a super curious explorer from a long, long time ago. He lived in a place called Genoa, which is in Italy today. He loved maps and dreaming about faraway lands. He was so good at planning and sailing that he convinced important people to give him ships to go on big adventures across the sea!

Setting Sail on Big Ships!

Cristóbal Colón wanted to find a new way to sail to Asia, a place full of spices and treasures. He thought if he sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean, he could get there. So, he got three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. The Santa María was the biggest, about as long as a school bus! They sailed for many, many days, seeing only water, which must have been a little scary.

Discovering New Lands!

After a long journey, Cristóbal Colón and his crew finally saw land! They landed on an island in a place we now call the Bahamas. He thought he had reached Asia, but he had actually found a whole new continent that was unknown to Europeans. This was a HUGE discovery! He made several more trips, exploring more islands and parts of what we now call Central and South America.

Why We Still Talk About Him

Cristóbal Colón's voyages were super important because they connected Europe with the Americas. This led to lots of changes, like new foods and animals being shared between these places. It also meant that people from Europe started to move to and explore these new lands. His journeys started a new chapter in history, changing the world in ways we still see today.
