Corn Dolly

Have you ever seen a doll made of straw? That's a corn dolly! People used to make these special figures from the stalks of wheat and other grains after they were harvested. They looked like little people or animals, all woven from golden straw. It was like a craft project, but with a very old story behind it!

Corn dollies are super old! They come from a time long, long ago, before we had big machines to harvest crops. People believed that the spirit of the corn, like a tiny magical being, lived in the fields. When they cut the corn, they wanted to make sure the spirit had a cozy place to stay for the winter.

The corn dolly was like a special house for the corn spirit. People would weave the very last bits of the harvest into these straw shapes. They thought the spirit would rest inside the dolly all winter. Then, when spring came, they would put the dolly back into the ground to help the new crops grow strong!

Making corn dollies was a way to say thank you for the harvest and to wish for good luck for the next year's crops. It was a way to connect with nature and the changing seasons. Even though we have machines now, these straw figures remind us of how people used to celebrate and respect the food they grew.
