Philly's Big Secret Meeting!

In the summer of 1787, a bunch of very important men gathered in a city called Philadelphia. It was so hot, but they stayed inside a special building to talk and make big decisions. This building is now called Independence Hall! They met for many weeks, from May all the way to September. It was like a really long, super important school project for the whole country!

Who Were These Guys?

The leaders who met were called delegates. They came from different places, like Virginia and New York. One of the most famous was George Washington, who was like a superhero general in the big war for America's freedom. They chose him to be in charge of their meeting. These delegates were trying to figure out the best way for America to be run, like deciding the rules for a giant game.

New Rules for a New Country!

At first, they thought they would just fix the old rules, but then they decided to make brand new ones! They argued a lot about how to make the government fair. They came up with three main parts: one to make laws, one to carry them out, and one to decide if laws were fair. It was like building a super cool LEGO castle with different sections for different jobs!

Signing the Big Paper!

After lots and lots of talking and agreeing, they wrote down all the new rules in a very important document called the Constitution. On September 17, 1787, many of the delegates signed their names on it. This paper became the plan for how the United States would work. It was a huge deal and helped make America the country it is today!
