Who Was Emperor Constans?

Imagine a super-important leader in the Roman Empire a long, long time ago! That was Constans. He was the youngest son of Emperor Constantine the Great, who was a really big deal. Constans became an emperor himself when he was still quite young. He got to rule over big parts of the Roman Empire, like Italy and Africa. He even fought in battles and visited faraway places like Roman Britain!

A Royal Family Squabble!

Being an emperor in a big family could be tricky! After his dad died, Constans and his brothers all became emperors. But they started arguing about who got to be in charge of what. Constans even had a big fight, a civil war, with his older brother, Constantine II. Constans won that fight, but it meant he got more land to rule. Sometimes, even royal families have disagreements!

Adventures in the Empire

Constans wasn't just sitting on a throne! He went on adventures. He fought against groups called the Sarmatians and the Franks. He even traveled all the way to Roman Britain in the year 343. Guess what? He was the very last Roman emperor to visit Britain for over a thousand years! That's longer than all your grandparents and great-grandparents have been alive, combined!

The End of His Reign

Sadly, Constans's time as emperor didn't last forever. In 350, a soldier named Magnentius decided he wanted to be emperor too. Magnentius and his friends took over and sadly, Constans was overthrown and killed. It was a very dramatic end for a Roman emperor who had seen so much of the empire!
