Meet the Gray Soldiers!

The Confederate States Army was like a team of soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. They wore gray uniforms, which is why they were sometimes called the 'Southern army.' This army was part of a new country called the Confederate States of America. They fought against the United States Army, which wore blue uniforms. The war lasted for four long years, from 1861 to 1865.

Where Did They Come From?

Before the war, the Southern states decided to form their own country. They chose a leader named Jefferson Davis. He was in charge of building this new army. He had been a soldier and even worked for the U.S. government before! The army started with volunteers, people who wanted to join. Later, more soldiers were needed, so some men were asked to join, like being picked for a team.

Fighting for Their Own Country

The Confederate Army fought to support the Southern states' decision to be separate. They believed in their way of life. The war was very hard, and many soldiers were hurt or got sick. Sadly, many also died. It's hard to know exactly how many soldiers were in the army because many records were lost. It was a very big fight that changed America forever.

The War Ends

After four years of fighting, the Confederate Army eventually stopped fighting. The leaders decided to surrender, which means they agreed to stop the war. The main armies gave up in April 1865. This was the end of the Confederate States of America and their army. The country was reunited, and the war was over.
