Key Facts
Africa's Gentle Giants!
Imagine an antelope that's as tall as a small car at the shoulder! That's the common eland! These amazing animals live in the sunny grasslands and open forests of Africa.
They have long, twisty horns and a special flap of skin hanging from their necks called a dewlap. They love to munch on yummy grasses and leaves, making them peaceful plant-eaters. They are so big, they can weigh as much as a small pony!
Herd Life and Loud Barks!
Common elands are super social and love to hang out in big groups, sometimes with up to 500 friends! That's like a whole playground full of elands! Even though they live in big herds, they don't fight over land.
When they need to talk or warn each other about danger, they can make loud barking sounds. They also use their bodies to show how they feel, like wiggling their ears or twitching their tails. It's their own special way of chatting!
Super Strong and Super Useful!
These antelopes are not just big, they are also very strong. Adult males can weigh as much as 10 grown-ups! That's a lot of weight!
People have even learned to work with elands. In some parts of Africa, they are raised like farm animals for their tasty meat and strong leather. And guess what?
Eland milk is extra special because it has more butterfat than cow's milk, making it super creamy and it can even be stored for a long time!
Where Do They Roam?
You can find common elands in many countries across East and Southern Africa. They like places with lots of different flowers and plants to eat, like savannas and grassy hills. They don't like thick, dark forests though.
While there are still many elands in the wild, their numbers are going down a little bit. Scientists are working to make sure these magnificent creatures can keep living in their African homes for a long, long time.
