Who's That Beetle?

Imagine a tiny bug, about as long as your fingernail, with bright orange and yellow colors and five bold brown stripes on each wing. That's the Colorado potato beetle! It's a beetle, which means it has a hard outer shell.

These little guys are famous because they really, really love to eat potato plants. They are found in many places, but they started their journey in the Rocky Mountains a long, long time ago.

A Journey Across the Land!

These stripey beetles weren't always everywhere. They used to live way up in the Rocky Mountains, munching on wild plants. But then, people started growing lots of yummy potato plants, and the beetles discovered this amazing new buffet!

They hitched rides on trains and boats, and soon they were traveling all over the United States and even across the ocean to Europe. It was like they were on a super-fast world tour!

Why They're a Big Deal

While they might look small, Colorado potato beetles can cause big problems for farmers. When lots of these beetles get together on a potato farm, they can eat so many leaves that the potato plants can't grow properly. This means fewer potatoes for us to eat! Farmers have to find clever ways to protect their crops from these hungry little visitors.

Buggy Facts You'll Love!

Did you know that scientists first saw these beetles way back in 1811? That's even before your grandparents were born! They are also called the 'ten-striped spearman' because of their stripes. Even though they are called potato beetles, they originally ate a different plant called 'buffalo bur' before they discovered potatoes. They are super good at finding potato plants to eat!
