Key Facts
Where in the World Was It?
The Colony of New South Wales was a super big place that belonged to the British Empire a long, long time ago, from 1788 to 1901. It was like a huge playground that stretched all the way from one side of Australia to the other, and even included New Zealand! Think of it as a giant puzzle piece of land that the British Empire used to own.
It was so big, it covered what we now call New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia, plus the Northern Territory and New Zealand!
Who Lived There and What Did They Do?
When the British first arrived, Indigenous Australians had been living on this land for thousands of years, with their own amazing cultures and traditions. Later, people from Britain came to live there. They built towns and started new lives.
They worked hard, farming the land and building things. It was a very different life from what they knew back in Britain, with new animals and plants all around them.
How Was It Run?
The Colony of New South Wales had a governor, who was like the main boss sent from Britain. But over time, the people living there got to have more say in how things were run. In 1856, they got their own government, which was a big step! This meant they could make their own rules and decisions about their colony, just like how your school has a principal and teachers who make decisions.
Learning New Things!
Just like you go to school to learn, people in the Colony of New South Wales also had schools. Children learned reading, writing, and math. Teachers helped them understand the world around them. It was important for everyone to get an education so they could grow up and help build the colony. Learning was a big part of life, helping everyone understand their new home.
