Meet the Cod!

Cod are super cool fish that live in the cold ocean waters. They have three fins on their back and two on their tummy, which help them swim super straight! They also have a special little beard called a barbel on their chin. This beard helps them feel around on the ocean floor to find yummy snacks. Cod can grow to be as long as a grown-up is tall, and they love to explore the big, blue sea.

Where Do Cod Call Home?

Imagine a giant, chilly swimming pool – that's kind of where cod live! They love the cold waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. You can find them swimming near the bottom of the sea, where it's a bit darker and cooler. They like to hang out in places with rocks and sand, which are like their underwater playgrounds. They are very important fish in these ocean homes.

What's on the Cod's Menu?

Cod are hungry hunters! They love to eat smaller fish, like herring and capelin, which are like tiny fishy snacks for them. They also gobble up shrimp, crabs, and even worms they find wiggling in the sand. Cod are carnivores, which means they only eat meat. They use their special chin beard to sniff out their meals hidden in the ocean floor. Yum!

Cod's Amazing Life!

Cod can live for a really long time, sometimes up to 17 years! That's older than many kids in elementary school! They can grow to be quite big, sometimes as long as a grown-up person. Sadly, there aren't as many cod in the ocean as there used to be. Scientists are working hard to make sure there are enough cod for everyone to enjoy in the future.
