Where in the World Are These Islands?

Far, far away in the big blue Indian Ocean, there are two groups of islands called the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. They are like tiny jewels dropped in the water, about halfway between Australia and Sri Lanka. Think of it like a super long road trip!

Only two of these islands have people living on them, and they are called West Island and Home Island. It's a very special place, far from big cities and busy roads.

Island Life: Palm Trees and Coconut Dreams!

These islands are made of coral, which is like tiny sea skeletons that build up over a long time. They are covered in green palm trees and have beautiful sandy beaches. The weather is warm and sunny almost all year round, perfect for playing outside!

The main thing people grow here is copra, which comes from coconuts and is used to make oil. It's like a giant coconut farm in the middle of the ocean!

A Long, Long Time Ago...

A long time ago, a sailor named William Keeling saw these islands. But people didn't start living there until much later. A man named John Clunies-Ross brought workers from Malaysia to help grow coconuts. His family was in charge for a very, very long time, almost 150 years! That's longer than your grandparents' grandparents have been alive! Eventually, Australia took care of the islands.

Who Lives Here and What Do They Do?

Most of the people who live on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are called Cocos Malays. They have their own special language, which is a bit like Malay, and they also speak English. They are very friendly and have lived there for many generations. They have their own local council that helps make decisions for their islands, and they work together to keep their home beautiful and running smoothly.
