Cockshoot

A cockshoot was like a special, wide-open path made in a thick forest. It wasn't a thing, but a place! Hunters would make these clearings, or find them, so they could catch birds called woodcocks. These birds like to fly low through openings, especially when it gets dark. So, the hunters made these paths just for them to fly through, like a bird highway!

Sometimes, hunters would cut down trees to make a straight, clear path about as wide as a few school buses parked side-by-side. Then, they'd stretch a big net between two trees. They'd hide and wait. When a woodcock flew down the path, they'd pull a rope, and the net would drop, catching the bird! It was a clever way to hunt without chasing the birds all over the place.

People used to call the time when the sun starts to set 'cockshut time'. This is because woodcocks would start flying around then, looking for water. The name 'cockshut' sounds like it means 'shutting in birds', but it really comes from the idea of the birds flying through the 'cockshoot' path. It's a funny mix-up of words!

Making cockshoots was a way people hunted birds a very, very long time ago. It's not something people do much anymore. The word 'cockshoot' is mostly remembered now because of the phrase 'cockshut time' for twilight. It's like a little piece of history that tells us how people used to live and hunt in the forests.
