Meet the Mighty Stone Church!

Imagine a building that's been standing for hundreds and hundreds of years! That's the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Great Missenden. It's made of strong stone, like a giant's castle. This church is so special that it's called a Grade I listed building, which means it's super important and protected. It's a place where people have gone for a very, very long time to learn and share stories.

Secrets from Long, Long Ago!

This church wasn't built all at once. Most of it is from a time called the 14th century, which is over 700 years ago! Then, in the 15th century, they made it even bigger and better. There's a special tower that had to be made extra strong. They built a wall almost as thick as a school bus is long to hold up new bells that came from a dissolved abbey. Wow!

A Special Place for Everyone!

This church is more than just old stones. It's a place where important things happened. It's also the final resting spot for a very famous storyteller, Roald Dahl! He wrote amazing books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You can visit his grave in the churchyard. There are also special memorials for brave soldiers who died protecting others. It's a place that remembers lots of people.

Building with Stones and Bells!

How do you build a church like this? They used rough stones called flint rubble, which are like bumpy rocks. They also used special, smooth stones called ashlar for decorations.

Sometimes, parts of the church are covered in a rough plaster called roughcast. Inside, there used to be five big bells that rang out across the town. These bells were moved from a nearby abbey that was closed down a long, long time ago.
