Meet the Giant of Rio!

High up on a mountain in Brazil stands a super-duper tall statue called Christ the Redeemer. It's a statue of Jesus with his arms spread out wide, like he's giving everyone a big hug! This amazing statue is so big, it's like stacking three school buses on top of each other. It watches over the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, which is famous for its beaches and lively music.

How Did This Big Guy Get Here?

Building Christ the Redeemer was a huge project that took many years, from 1922 to 1931! Lots of clever people worked on it. A sculptor named Paul Landowski designed it, and engineers named Heitor da Silva Costa and Albert Caquot figured out how to build it.

Even the face was sculpted by a talented artist named Gheorghe Leonida. They used special concrete and tiny stones called soapstone to make it strong and beautiful.

A Hugging Statue with a Secret!

Did you know that Christ the Redeemer wasn't always planned to have its arms spread out? At first, the idea was for Jesus to hold a globe in one hand and a cross in the other! But the people building it decided that the open arms looked friendlier and more welcoming.

So, now it stands with its arms wide open, stretching out 28 meters (that's like the wingspan of a big airplane!) for everyone to see.

Why Everyone Loves This Statue!

Christ the Redeemer is more than just a big statue; it's a symbol of hope and love for many people. It's so famous that it was even chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World! It's a special part of Brazil's culture and a welcoming sight for visitors. Standing on top of Corcovado mountain, it's like a friendly giant keeping watch over the city below.
