Chimaera (fish)

Imagine a fish that looks like it's from another planet! That's a Chimaera. They are also called ghost sharks, ratfish, or rabbit fish.

They have big, spooky eyes and a long, pointy nose. Some Chimaeras have a fin on their back that looks like a unicorn's horn! They don't have any teeth like we do, but they have hard plates in their mouths that they use to crunch up their food.

They are truly one of the ocean's most mysterious creatures.

Chimaeras are shy and live in the deep, dark parts of the ocean, far below where the sunlight can reach. Think of it like living in the basement of the ocean! They can be found in oceans all around the world, from cold waters near the North Pole to warmer seas.

They like to swim near the bottom of the sea, where they can find yummy snacks like small crabs and worms hiding in the sand. They are like the deep-sea explorers of the fish world!

Chimaeras have some amazing features. One cool thing is their tail, which looks like a long whip and helps them swim. They also have a special spine in front of their back fin that can deliver a mild sting if you touch it, like a tiny, prickly defense!
