The Head Honcho of the Highest Court!

Imagine a super important job in the United States, like being the captain of a big ship! The Chief Justice of the United States is like the head captain of the Supreme Court. This court is the most important court in the whole country.

The Chief Justice leads the other judges, called justices, and helps them decide if laws are fair and follow the rules of the Constitution. It's a big responsibility to make sure justice is served!

Who Gets to Be the Top Judge?

The President of the United States gets to pick who becomes the Chief Justice. But it's not that simple! The President has to ask the Senate, which is like a big group of important people who represent all the states, if they agree. If the Senate says 'yes,' then the person gets the job. They can stay in this job for a very, very long time, until they decide to retire or stop working.

What Does the Chief Justice Actually Do?

The Chief Justice does a lot of cool things! They get to lead the meetings where the justices talk about important cases. They also get to decide who writes the final explanation, called an opinion, when the court makes a decision.

Even though their vote counts the same as everyone else's, they have a special role in guiding the court. Sometimes, the Chief Justice even leads the ceremony where the President promises to do a good job!

Meet Some Famous Chief Justices!

Since the Supreme Court started a long, long time ago in 1789, there have only been 17 Chief Justices. The very first one was named John Jay. The Chief Justice who is in charge right now is John Roberts, and he's been doing it since 2005!

One Chief Justice, William Taft, was even President of the United States before he became Chief Justice. That's like being a principal and then becoming the mayor!
