Key Facts
King of France!
Charles VIII was the King of France for a long time, from when he was just 13 years old until he was 28. He was born in a big castle called the Château d'Amboise. When his dad, King Louis XI, passed away, Charles became king.
But since he was so young, his older sister Anne and her husband helped him rule until he was 21. It's like having a grown-up help you with your homework until you're old enough to do it all by yourself!
A Royal Wedding Surprise!
Charles did something super surprising when he married Anne of Brittany. She was already supposed to marry another prince from far away! But Charles was very determined.
He married her, and this helped France become even bigger and stronger. It was a very important marriage that changed how France and other countries in Europe got along. He became the boss of Brittany, which was like adding a whole new playground to his kingdom!
Adventure to Italy!
Charles VIII was a brave king who decided to go on a huge adventure to Italy! He had a special army with amazing new cannons that were like super-powered water guns. He marched all the way down the Italian Peninsula, and because his cannons were so cool, he didn't have much trouble.
It was like walking through a maze where all the doors just opened for him! He even fought a big battle at the end of his trip.
A King's Oopsie
Sadly, Charles VIII's story ended a bit suddenly. He was walking through his castle and, oops! He bumped his head really hard on the top of a doorway. It was a very sad accident. He didn't have any children to become the next king, so his cousin, Louis XII, took over. Charles was known as 'the Affable,' which means he was friendly and kind.
