Who Was This Bald King?

Charles the Bald was a king way, way back in the 800s. That's over a thousand years ago! He was born in 823. He became king of a big place called West Francia, which is like a part of modern-day France. He was also a grandson of a super famous king named Charlemagne, who was like a superhero of his time! Charles was the youngest son, but he still got to be king!

A Kingdom Divided!

Charles's dad, Louis the Pious, had a huge kingdom. But after he passed away, his sons started fighting over who would get what. It was like a big family argument over toys!

To stop the fighting, they made a special agreement called the Treaty of Verdun. This treaty split the big kingdom into three parts. Charles got the western part, which was about one-third of the whole thing.

It was a big deal because it helped decide where countries would be for a long, long time.

Why 'The Bald'?

Now, why do we call him Charles the Bald? Well, it's not because he had no hair at all! It's more likely because he didn't have a lot of hair, or maybe he had a special kind of haircut that made him look that way. Some people think it was just a nickname that stuck. It's a funny way to remember a king, isn't it? Imagine if your teacher called you 'Timmy the Tall' or 'Sarah the Speedy'!

A King's Big Jobs

Being king was a very important job back then. Charles had to make sure his kingdom was safe and that people followed the rules. He also became King of Italy and even an Emperor! That means he was in charge of even more land and people. He ruled for many years, from 843 until he passed away in 877. He was a very busy king, dealing with wars and making big decisions for his people.
