Where Was Spain?

Charles IV was the king of Spain, a country in Europe that looks like a big boot kicking Italy! Spain has sunny beaches and tall mountains. It's a place with lots of history, like old castles and famous explorers. The people there speak Spanish, which sounds like music! Spain is a beautiful country with a warm climate, perfect for growing yummy olives and grapes.

King Charles's Big Job

Being king is like being the principal of a whole country! Charles IV became king a long, long time ago, in 1788. He ruled over Spain and a huge empire, which meant he was in charge of many places far away. But ruling wasn't always fun. He had to deal with wars and find money to pay for them. It sounds like a lot of pressure for a king!

Family Squabbles!

Even kings have family problems! Charles IV really didn't get along with his son, Ferdinand. Ferdinand was supposed to be the next king, but he was so unhappy that he even tried to get his dad in trouble! This caused a lot of drama in the royal family. Eventually, Ferdinand made Charles IV give up his crown. Imagine arguing with your parents so much they make you quit your job!

A New Boss for Spain

Things got even crazier when a super famous leader named Napoleon Bonaparte showed up. Napoleon was like a powerful general who wanted to control lots of countries. He made Charles IV and his son Ferdinand both give up their claims to the throne. Then, Napoleon put his own brother in charge of Spain! It was a really big change for Spain and not a very happy one for Charles IV.
