Chappe Telegraph

Key Facts
Meet the Speedy Message Towers!
Long, long ago, before phones or computers, people wanted to send messages really fast. Claude Chappe invented a super cool way to do it using tall towers! These towers were like giant arms that could move and show different signals. People watched these signals with telescopes from one tower to the next, like a game of telephone, but way faster!
How the Towers Talked to Each Other
Each Chappe telegraph tower was like a special post office. They were built about as far apart as you might walk in an hour. Operators at each tower used a special machine with a long pole and two smaller arms. By moving these arms into different positions, they could make lots of different codes. Someone at the next tower would watch with a telescope and write down the message, then send it on!
Messages Zooming Across France!
These towers were so clever that messages could travel super fast! Imagine sending a message from Paris all the way to another big city in just a few hours. The Chappe telegraph network grew to be hundreds of kilometers long, connecting many important cities. It was like the internet of its time, but with towers instead of wires!
When the Towers Said Goodbye
The Chappe telegraph was amazing for its time, but then something even newer and faster came along: the electric telegraph! This new invention used wires and electricity to send messages. Because it was so much faster and easier, people stopped using the Chappe towers. Today, you can still find some of these old towers standing, like quiet reminders of a time when messages flew through the air!
