A Hill Made of Whales!

Have you ever seen a hill? Well, Cerro Ballena in Chile is like a giant playground made of whale bones! It means 'Whale Hill' in Spanish.

This amazing place is in the Atacama Desert, which is super dry. But long, long ago, this desert was actually under the sea! Scientists found over 40 whale skeletons there, from grown-up whales to tiny baby whales.

It's like a whole whale family reunion from millions of years ago!

When Did This Happen?

This happened a super long time ago, during a period called the Late Miocene. That's way before dinosaurs, but even before humans were around! Imagine a time when giant whales swam in the ocean where the desert is now.

Scientists found this special place in 1965, but they really studied it between 2011 and 2012. Now, it's protected like a national treasure because it tells us so much about ancient ocean life.

Why So Many Whales?

Scientists think a really strange thing happened to make so many whales end up here. Tiny ocean plants called algae made a special poison. The whales ate these plants or the fish that ate them and got sick. Their bodies floated to the shore, and strong waves pushed them all together. Then, they got buried in the sand. This happened four times, creating this incredible whale graveyard!

More Than Just Whales!

Cerro Ballena isn't just about whales! Scientists also found fossils of other ancient sea creatures. There are bones from seals, and even fossils of speedy fish like sailfish and sharks.

They even found fossils of sloths that lived in the water! It's like a whole ancient ocean ecosystem all squished together in one spot. This makes Cerro Ballena a super important place for learning about Earth's past.
