Little Luxuries
Man's waistcoat of cashmere wool and linen, fabric woven in India, 1775-1785, and made in Great Britain, 1785-1790. Man's waistcoat of cashmere wool and linen, and made from a fringed Indian cashmere shawl with a white ground. Patterned with alternating rows of small green pines with yellow centres. The borders are composed of alternating rose pink carnations and yellow flowers, with a green centre linked by their stems that form an arcaded pattern, and edged with black interwoven with small yellow gold leaf shapes. A portion of the ends of the shawl, now used to face the lapels, has a design of large rounded motifs filled with a close pattern of pinks linked by their foliage and narrow black stripes. The body of the waistcoat is made from the main ground of the shawl. The woven borders are stitched around the edges, and the sides of the ends with borders and fringe attached face back the lapels. The waistcoat is just over waist-length, square cut, double-breasted, and cut to allow the lapels to fall open. There are plain welted bands stitched at pocket level but no pockets have been inserted and it is double-breasted. There are 24 small round buttons covered with material from the body of the shawl. The back is made from white linen. Cashmere wool and linen, hand woven and hand sewn.

Meet the Fluffy Cashmere Goats!

Imagine a goat, but even softer! That's where cashmere wool comes from. It’s not just any goat, but special breeds like the cashmere goat and pashmina goat. These amazing animals live in cold places, and their super-soft undercoat keeps them super warm. This fluffy wool is what we use to make cozy sweaters and scarves that feel like a warm hug!

A Woolly Journey Through Time!

People have loved cashmere wool for hundreds and hundreds of years! It became super famous because of beautiful shawls made in a place called Kashmir. When these fancy shawls arrived in Europe a long time ago, everyone wanted them! The word 'cashmere' actually comes from the name of this place. It’s like a woolly treasure that traveled the world!

Why Cashmere is So Special!

Cashmere wool is like a superhero for your clothes! It’s incredibly soft, much softer than regular wool. It’s also really good at keeping you just the right temperature. If it’s cold, it traps heat to keep you warm. If it’s a bit warmer, it lets moisture out so you don’t get too sweaty. It’s like having a tiny, cozy climate control system right on your skin!

From Goat to Gorgeous Sweater!

Getting cashmere wool is a careful process. First, the softest, fluffiest undercoat from the goats is gently collected. This super-fine hair is then spun into yarn, which is like making long, thin strings of wool.

These strings are then woven or knitted together to make amazing clothes like sweaters, hats, and scarves. It takes a lot of work to turn fluffy goat hair into something so soft and warm!
