Who's That with the Tassel Ears?

Imagine a cat with super-long, pointy ears that have little black tufts on the ends, like tiny tassels! That's a caracal! These cool cats live in dry, sandy places like deserts and savannas in Africa and parts of Asia. They are about as tall as a big dog at the shoulder, but much more muscular. Their fur is usually a sandy or reddish color, perfect for hiding in the dry grass.

Jumping Cat Champions!

Caracals are incredible jumpers! They can leap up to three times their own height straight into the air. Why do they jump so high? To catch birds! They're so fast and accurate that they can snatch birds right out of the sky. They also love to eat small animals like mice and rabbits. They are very sneaky hunters, creeping up on their dinner before pouncing!

A Cat's Life: Alone and Alert

Most of the time, caracals like to be by themselves. They are very shy and like to sleep during the day and hunt at night when it's cooler and darker. They are also very good at marking their territory to let other caracals know it's their special spot. Sometimes, a boy and girl caracal might hang out together, but usually, they roam their own areas.

Tiny Kittens, Big Leaps

When caracal mommies have babies, they have between one and six little kittens. These tiny kittens are born blind and helpless, but they grow up fast! By the time they are about 10 months old, they are ready to go out on their own and start their own adventures. In zoos, caracals can live for a really long time, almost 16 years!
