Meet the Red Ensign!

The Canadian Red Ensign was a special flag that flew for Canada a long, long time ago, from 1892 all the way until 1965. It looked a bit like a British flag because Canada was part of the British Empire back then. It had a red background, and in the top corner, it had the Union Jack, which is the flag of the United Kingdom.

On the red part, it had a picture of Canada's special coat of arms, like a fancy family crest for the whole country!

Where Did This Flag Come From?

This flag started showing up around the 1870s, even before it was officially Canada's flag. People started using it on ships sailing the seas and on important buildings. It was like Canada's way of saying 'hello' to the world!

For a while, the flag had pictures of all the different Canadian provinces. But in 1922, they changed it to have just one big picture of Canada's coat of arms. It was a symbol that grew with the country!

Why Was This Flag So Important?

The Red Ensign was super important because it was how Canada was represented for many years. When Canadian soldiers went to fight in World War II, this flag was a symbol of their bravery and their country. Later, in 1945, the government officially said it was a 'distinctive Canadian flag' to fly on government buildings.

It showed that Canada was becoming its own special place, even though it was still connected to Britain.

A New Flag Takes Over!

Even though the Red Ensign was Canada's flag for a long time, it was never officially the national flag. That job was still for the British flag! Then, in 1965, Canada got its very own, super famous flag: the Maple Leaf!

The Maple Leaf flag took over from the Red Ensign, becoming Canada's first official national flag and also the flag flown on ships. The Red Ensign had a great run, but it was time for a new symbol!
