Key Facts
Where the French Explorers Sailed!
Long, long ago, France decided to claim a big piece of land in North America. This land was called New France, and a part of it was known as Canada. It stretched along the mighty Saint Lawrence River, which the French explorers even called the Canada River! This was a wild place with forests and rivers, very different from the towns and cities we know today.
Building New Homes!
The first French explorers, like Jacques Cartier, arrived way back in 1534. But it took a while to build real homes. The very first official French town was Quebec, started by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Think of it like building the first house on a huge empty field! Later, other important places like Montreal and Trois-Rivières were also built.
A Land of Many Rivers and Forests
New France was a huge place! It had parts along the cold Hudson Bay, the eastern lands of Acadia, and even way down south to a place called Louisiana. But the heart of it, the part called Canada, was mostly along the Saint Lawrence River. This river was super important for travel and for trading, like a giant highway made of water!
When the British Came to Visit
For many years, Canada was French. But then, a big war happened between France and Great Britain. The British won, and they took over Canada in 1763. It was like one team winning a big game and taking home the trophy. Canada then became a British place called the Province of Quebec.
