Key Facts
Where is This Secret Spot?
Imagine a super-secret place hidden in the green, hilly woods of Maryland. It's called Camp David! It's not a regular camp with tents, but a special country home for the President of the United States. Think of it like a big, quiet backyard for the President to relax and think. It's about as far from Washington D.C. as a long car ride to visit grandparents, tucked away in the Catoctin Mountains.
A Place with a Past!
This special place wasn't always for presidents! Long ago, it was built for government workers and their families to enjoy. Then, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt thought it would be a great escape for the President and called it Shangri-La, like a magical, faraway land. Later, President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave it its name, Camp David, to honor his father and grandson, who were both named David.
It's like a house that has many stories to tell!
Who Works at Camp David?
Even though it's a place for the President, it's also a military base! Sailors and Marines, who are part of the Navy, help keep everything running smoothly. They are like the super-helpers who make sure the buildings are strong and the grounds are neat. They are very important people who work hard to make sure the President and their guests have a safe and comfortable stay.
What Happens There?
Camp David is a place for important meetings and relaxing breaks. Presidents have invited leaders from other countries to talk about big world problems here. It's also a place where presidents can spend time with their families, away from all the hustle and bustle of the White House. Imagine having a special family picnic in a beautiful, peaceful forest – that's kind of what it's like!
