Who Were the Camisards?

Imagine a group of people called Huguenots who lived in a very hilly and wild place in France called the Cévennes. These were the Camisards! They loved their way of worship, but a king named Louis XIV didn't like it.

He made their religion against the rules, like telling you you can't play your favorite game anymore. The Camisards decided they had to be brave and protect their right to believe what they wanted.

A Big Upset!

In the year 1702, things got really serious. The Camisards started a big stand against the king's unfair rules. They were like a team of superheroes protecting their home.

The fighting was toughest for a few years, but even after that, there were smaller fights for a long time. It was like a long game of hide-and-seek and tag in the mountains, but with real danger. They wanted to be free to practice their religion.

Why They Were Super!

The Camisards were super brave because they fought for their freedom to believe. Even though the king was powerful, they didn't give up easily. Their fight showed that people can be strong even when things are tough. It took many, many years, until 1787, for France to finally say it was okay for everyone to believe what they wanted. That's longer than you've been alive!

Where They Lived and Fought

The Camisards lived in a beautiful but rugged area called the Cévennes, which means it was full of hills and forests, perfect for hiding! They also lived in a place called Vaunage. Imagine trying to catch someone who knows every secret path in a giant, hilly playground. That's kind of what it was like for the soldiers trying to catch the Camisards. They used their home to their advantage.
