Key Facts
The President's Brain Trust!
The Cabinet is like the President's special group of advisors. They are the heads of important government jobs, like keeping our country safe or making sure our money is okay. They meet with the President, usually in a room close to the President's office in the White House.
The President leads these meetings, but the Cabinet members are the ones who run their own big government departments every day. It's a very important job!
Who's In the Club?
There are lots of people in the Cabinet! The Vice President is always there. Then there are 15 people who are in charge of big departments, like the Department of Defense (for the military) or the Department of Education (for schools).
Some other important people can also be invited to join the meetings. All these people are chosen by the President and have to be approved by another group called the Senate. They are like the President's top helpers.
Super Powers and Jobs!
Each Cabinet member has a special job. For example, the Secretary of State helps the President with other countries, like making friends and talking about important world stuff. The Secretary of the Treasury helps with money.
The Attorney General is in charge of making sure laws are followed. They all have a lot of power in their own areas, but they always listen to the President. The President can even choose to let them make big decisions on their own!
When Did This Start?
The idea of a Cabinet wasn't written down in the very first rules for the country, the Constitution. But the President needed people to help run things. So, over time, Presidents started picking advisors.
The first President, George Washington, had a very small Cabinet. Now, it's a much bigger team! The Cabinet helps the President make sure the country runs smoothly and that everyone is taken care of.
