Meet the Byford Dolphin!

The Byford Dolphin was like a super-duper big floating house, but instead of people living there all the time, it was a special kind of boat called a drilling rig. It was used to explore deep under the ocean, looking for important things like oil. It looked like two big pontoons (like giant floats) connected by strong legs, with a big platform on top. It was so big, it was like a floating city!

Sailing the North Sea Seas!

This giant rig didn't stay in one place. It sailed around a very big and sometimes stormy ocean called the North Sea. It worked in different countries' parts of the sea, like near Britain, Denmark, and Norway. It was like a busy worker, moving from job to job, drilling for treasures hidden deep beneath the waves. It was a very important tool for finding energy!

A Big Surprise Under the Waves

Sometimes, things can be tricky when you work so deep underwater. The Byford Dolphin had a very serious accident a long time ago. It was like a sudden, big pop that was very dangerous. Sadly, some people who were working on the rig got hurt very badly, and some even lost their lives. It was a very sad day for everyone involved.

What Happened to the Dolphin?

After many years of working hard, the Byford Dolphin got very old. In 2019, it was decided that it was time for it to stop working. Instead of drilling anymore, it was taken apart, like taking apart a big LEGO set. This is called being 'scrapped'. It means it was no longer needed for its important job of exploring under the sea.
