Who Were Burke and Wills?

Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills were like the captains of a very important adventure! They wanted to be the first people to walk all the way across Australia, from the bottom to the very top. It was like trying to walk from your house to a friend's house that's super, super far away, across a whole country!

They started their journey in 1860 with a team of 19 men and lots of horses and wagons.

The Great Australian Trek!

Their big goal was to travel about 3,250 kilometers (that's like walking to the moon and back a little bit!). Most of the middle of Australia was a big mystery to people from other countries back then. The team set off in winter, and it was slow going at first because of bad weather and bumpy roads.

They even had to fix broken wagons! Eventually, they split up, and Burke and Wills pushed on towards the north coast.

Uh Oh! Trouble on the Way Back!

After reaching a place called Cooper Creek, Burke and Wills, along with two other men, tried to get to the very northern tip of Australia. But when they turned around to go home, things got tricky. They ran into monsoon rains, which are like super heavy rainstorms. When they finally got back to Cooper Creek, the camp they had left was gone! They had missed their friends by just a few hours.

A Sad Ending to a Big Dream

Sadly, Burke and Wills got lost and ran out of food. They died in June 1861. It was a very sad end to their amazing journey. Even though they didn't make it all the way back, other explorers were sent to look for them and found new places. Only one person from their original team, John King, made it back to tell the story. It shows how brave, but also how dangerous, exploring can be!
