Who Was Bunkō?
Imagine a super-friendly dog who lived at a fire station! That was Bunkō. He was a special mixed-breed dog who became the mascot for the Otaru city fire department in Japan.
He wasn't just a pet; he was part of the team! Bunkō was found as a tiny puppy in the ashes after a fire. The kind firefighters took him in, and he lived with them for almost his whole life.
He loved being around the firefighters and helping out in any way he could.
Bunkō's Firefighting Adventures!
Bunkō didn't just sleep at the fire station. He went on real fire calls with the firefighters! He would ride in their truck, wagging his tail.
When they arrived at a fire, Bunkō had important jobs. He helped keep the crowds of curious people from getting too close to the firefighters, making sure everyone stayed safe. He also helped untangle the long, heavy hoses that the firefighters used to spray water.
He was a very busy dog!
A Very Long Life for a Good Boy!
Bunkō lived for a super long time for a dog – 24 years! That's like a person living to be over 100 years old! He saw over 1,000 fire dispatches during his life.
