Where is This Mysterious Island?

Imagine a small island floating in a big river, not too far from the ocean! Bunce Island is in the Sierra Leone River, about as far upriver as you can go before the water gets too shallow for big boats. It's like a little speck in the water, but it's in a super important spot.

The island is only about as long as five school buses parked end to end and not very wide at all. It's a special place in Africa, near a country called Sierra Leone.

A Castle on a Tiny Island!

On this small island, there's an old castle! It was built a very, very long time ago, even before your grandparents were born. This castle wasn't for kings and queens to live in. It was built by people who wanted to trade things. The castle has thick walls, and it stands on the island like a guardian. Even though the island is small, the castle made it a famous place for ships to stop.

Ships, Trade, and a Sad Story

Bunce Island was a busy place for ships a long time ago. Ships would come to trade, but sadly, it was also a place where people were forced onto ships to go far away and work as slaves. This is a very sad part of its history. Many people who were taken from Africa ended up in places like America. Their families are still there today, remembering this important history.

Remembering Bunce Island Today

Today, Bunce Island is mostly quiet. But people remember its story. They have made special pictures and exhibits to show what the castle looked like a long, long time ago. This helps everyone learn about the island's past and why it's important to remember the people who were there. It's a place that teaches us about history and how things have changed.
