Meet the Armadillo!

Imagine an animal wearing its own suit of armor! That's an armadillo! Its name means 'little armored one' in Spanish. These amazing creatures have bony plates covering their bodies, like a knight's armor. When danger is near, some armadillos can curl into a ball, tucking their head and tail in so only their tough shell is showing. It’s like a living, walking turtle, but much more interesting!

Where Do They Dig?

Armadillos are super diggers! They use their strong claws to make burrows, which are like underground homes. They live in many different places, from warm, sunny deserts to grassy fields and forests. You can find them in North and South America. Their burrows help them stay safe from predators and the weather, and they also use them to find yummy food.

What's for Dinner?

Armadillos are mostly insect eaters. They have long, sticky tongues that are perfect for slurping up ants and termites from their nests. They also love to munch on beetles, worms, and other creepy crawlies they find underground. They use their excellent sense of smell to sniff out their meals hidden beneath the soil. It’s like a treasure hunt for food every day!

Armadillo Superpowers!

Did you know some armadillos can jump really high? When startled by a car, the nine-banded armadillo can leap straight up into the air, sometimes right into the car's path! They also have amazing hearing and can hear insects moving underground. Their tough shell is their best defense, making them hard for other animals to eat.
