Key Facts
A Super Promise Signed in Hungary!
Once upon a time, in a place called Budapest, Hungary, leaders from big countries made a very important promise. It was like a special handshake to make sure some countries wouldn't be scared of having scary weapons. Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan had these super-powerful weapons, but they agreed to give them up.
In return, countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia promised to protect them and never use force against them. It was all signed on December 5, 1994, in a big hall!
Why Give Up the Big Boom-Booms?
Giving up nuclear weapons is a HUGE deal! These weapons are like the biggest, scariest fireworks imaginable, and they can cause so much damage. Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan decided that having them was too dangerous for everyone.
So, they became 'nuclear-free' countries. This meant they were saying 'no thank you' to having those powerful weapons anymore, trusting their friends to keep them safe instead. It was a big step towards peace!
When Promises Get Broken...
Sadly, sometimes even big promises can be broken. In 2014, and again in 2022, Russia did not keep its promise to Ukraine. It used its military to take over parts of Ukraine.
This was a big shock because the Budapest Memorandum was supposed to prevent exactly that! The United States and the United Kingdom helped Ukraine with supplies and money, but they didn't send their own soldiers to fight Russia directly, to avoid an even bigger problem.
What Does It Mean Today?
The Budapest Memorandum shows us how important it is for countries to trust each other and keep their word. Even though promises were broken, the world remembers this agreement. It's a reminder that when countries agree to disarm (give up weapons), they should be protected. It also shows that when promises are broken, other countries might step in to help, but it's a very complicated situation.
