Key Facts
Where Did They Stand?
During the American Civil War, some states were like Switzerland, trying to stay neutral! These were called the border states. They were slave states, but they didn't want to leave the United States.
There were four main ones: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. Later, a new state called West Virginia joined them. These states were super important because they were right between the North (the Union) and the South (the Confederacy).
A Tricky Choice!
It was tough for these states. They had friends and family on both sides! Maryland was kept from leaving by soldiers, and Kentucky and Missouri had two governments at once! It was like having two best friends who were fighting. The leaders of the country knew that keeping these states on the Union side was a big deal for winning the war.
Why They Were Super Important
These states were like a bridge. They had people who liked the North and people who liked the South. If they had all joined the South, it would have made the war much harder for the North. President Abraham Lincoln really wanted them to stay with the Union. He even made sure his special announcement about freeing slaves didn't apply to them at first, to keep them happy!
Who Was In Charge?
Two very important leaders in the Civil War were born in Kentucky, one of these border states! President Abraham Lincoln, who led the North, and President Jefferson Davis, who led the South, both came from the same place. This shows how these states were right in the middle of everything. Even though they had slaves, they eventually ended slavery themselves before the war was completely over.
