What is Bon?

Imagine a special way of believing and living that started a super long time ago in Tibet! That's Bon. It's like a cousin to Buddhism, with some similar ideas but also its own unique magic.

People who follow Bon are called Bonpos. They believe their religion began in a faraway kingdom near a very special mountain called Mount Kailash. It's a way of life that has been passed down through many, many years.

A Journey Through Time!

Bon is really old, with some parts being even older than when your grandparents were kids! It's thought to have started in a place called Zhangzhung, which was near the amazing Mount Kailash. Then, it traveled to Tibet.

Over hundreds of years, Bon changed and grew, sometimes mixing with other beliefs, like Buddhism. Think of it like a story that keeps getting new chapters written by different people over a very long time.

Why Bon is So Cool!

Bon is super important because it's one of the oldest ways of believing in Tibet. It's like a living museum of ancient traditions! Even though it's a smaller group now, it's still practiced by many people, especially in eastern Tibet and other Himalayan places.

It shows us how different cultures have their own special ways of understanding the world and their place in it. It’s a connection to the past that’s still very much alive.

Bon's Special Sparkle

Bon has its own special founder, a wise teacher named Shenrab Miwo. Bonpos believe he brought the teachings to the world. There are different kinds of Bon, like the really old 'Ancient Bon' and the 'Eternal Bon' which is the main one today. It's fascinating how these traditions have survived and are still practiced, even in places like Europe and North America now!
