Why Did Planes Drop Bombs on Vienna?
During a huge fight called World War II, countries were at war. Vienna, a beautiful city in Austria, was part of one side. The other side, flying in big airplanes, wanted to stop Vienna and its country from fighting.
So, they dropped bombs to try and make them stop. It was a very sad time for the people living there, and many homes were damaged or destroyed. The planes came back again and again, making it a scary place to be.
What Happened When the Bombs Fell?
Imagine 52 surprise visits from loud, scary planes! That’s how many times Vienna was bombed. When the bombs fell, they made huge holes in the ground, like giant scoops taken out of the earth.
There were over 3,000 of these bomb holes! Sadly, many houses were broken. So many houses were lost, it’s like losing every fifth house in your town.
Even cars were hard to find after the bombing, with only a few left safe.
Vienna's Brave People
Even though it was scary, the people of Vienna tried to stay strong. They had to hide when they heard the planes coming. They helped each other rebuild their homes and their city.
It took a very long time to fix everything that was broken. The people learned to be brave and work together. They hoped for a time when the planes would stop coming and they could live safely again.
It shows how strong people can be when they face tough times.
What Did the Bombs Do?
The bombs dropped on Vienna were very powerful. They could break buildings and make big holes. Over 37,000 homes were damaged or gone, which is a lot of places for families to live.
Think about losing all the houses on your street, and then many more! Only 41 cars were left untouched, which is like only a few cars left in a whole city. The bombing changed Vienna a lot, and it took many years to make it feel normal again.
