Key Facts
Meet the Hook-Lipped Giant!
Imagine a giant animal with a big horn on its nose! That's a black rhinoceros. Even though they're called 'black,' they can be brown or gray, like a muddy puddle. They have a special lip that looks like a hook, perfect for grabbing tasty leaves and branches. They are super strong and can weigh as much as a small car! These amazing creatures roam the wild lands of Africa.
What's for Dinner?
Black rhinos are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. Their hooked lips are like special grabbers, helping them pull leaves, twigs, and branches off bushes and trees. They love to munch on thorny acacia trees!
They spend a lot of their day eating, sometimes up to 12 hours. They need to eat a lot to keep their big bodies strong. They don't drink water every day, getting moisture from the plants they eat.
Rhino Homes and Families
Black rhinos live in different parts of Africa, in places with lots of bushes and trees to eat, like savannas and grasslands. They usually live by themselves, not in big families. A mommy rhino, called a cow, will have one baby, called a calf, at a time. The calf stays with its mom for a few years, learning how to find food and stay safe. It's like a big, strong bodyguard for the little one!
Why Rhinos Need Our Help
Sadly, black rhinos are in trouble. People sometimes hunt them for their horns, which is very dangerous for the rhinos. Their homes are also getting smaller. This means there aren't as many black rhinos left in the world. Scientists are working hard to protect them and their homes so that these incredible animals can continue to live in Africa for a long, long time.
