Key Facts
Who's That Bird? Meet the Black Grouse!
Imagine a bird that looks like it's wearing a fancy tuxedo! That's the male black grouse. He's a big bird, about as tall as a toddler, and he has shiny black feathers.
The girl black grouse, called a hen, is more camouflaged with brown and grey feathers, perfect for hiding her nest. They are part of the grouse family and are found in wild, open grassy areas called moors and steppes, often near forests.
A Bird's Big Dinner!
What do black grouse munch on? In the summer, they love to eat yummy plants and bugs found on the ground. But when winter comes, they become super picky eaters! They fly into forests and eat almost only the needles from pine trees. It’s like they’re having a special winter salad! This helps them stay warm and full when food is hard to find.
Where Do They Hang Out?
Black grouse are like homebodies; they don't travel very far. They like to live in places called the Palearctic region, which is a huge area in Europe and Asia. You'll find them in grassy moors and steppes, which are like big, open fields with few trees. But when it gets cold, they move to the edges of forests to find shelter and their favorite pine needle snacks.
Mom's the Boss!
When it's time to have babies, the mom black grouse does all the work! She finds a safe spot to build a nest and lays her eggs. After they hatch, she takes care of the little chicks all by herself, teaching them how to find food and stay safe. The dad doesn't help with the baby-rearing, so mom is a super busy bird!
