Where Did Bernard Live?

Bernard was a king a super long time ago, way back in the year 797! He was the King of Italy, which is a country that looks like a boot kicking a ball. Back then, Italy was part of a giant empire called the Carolingian Empire.

This empire was like a huge kingdom ruled by one big family. Bernard lived in a time when kings and emperors were very important, and their decisions affected everyone in their lands.

A Royal Family Tree Twist!

Bernard was the son of Pepin of Italy, but he wasn't born when his parents were married. This made him an 'illegitimate son.' Even though he was born outside of marriage, he still became the King of Italy after his father. But things got tricky because his uncle, Emperor Louis the Pious, made a new plan for who would rule what.

This plan made Bernard have to listen to his cousin, Lothair, which Bernard really didn't like!

A Plot and a Sad Ending

Because Bernard was unhappy about his new role, he decided to make a secret plan against his uncle, Emperor Louis. He wanted to be in charge without having to obey his cousin. But his secret plan was discovered! The Emperor found out, and Bernard was punished. He was removed from being king and sadly, he was blinded. This terrible punishment led to his death in 818. It's a sad part of his story.

What Was Italy Like Back Then?

Italy, where Bernard was king, was a very different place 1,200 years ago. It was part of a huge empire, not a separate country like it is today. People lived in towns and villages, and farming was super important.

There weren't any cars or airplanes, so travel was slow, mostly by horse or boat. Kings and their families had a lot of power, and life could be very different depending on whether you were rich or poor.
