Key Facts
Meet the Boar-Capped Warrior!
Long, long ago, over 1,400 years ago, a special helmet was made for a brave warrior. It's called the Benty Grange helmet! It wasn't just any helmet; it had a fierce boar standing right on top. This helmet is super old, from a time called the Anglo-Saxon era. It was found buried in a big pile of earth, like a secret treasure waiting to be discovered.
A Helmet's Amazing Journey
This helmet was dug up in 1848 by a man named Thomas Bateman. He found it on a farm in a place called Derbyshire. The helmet was made of iron covered with horn, and inside it had cloth or leather. It was like a super-strong hat for fighting! It's the very first Anglo-Saxon helmet ever found, and since then, five more have been discovered, like finding a whole set of ancient armor!
Why This Helmet is So Cool!
The most awesome part is the boar on top! It's a symbol of strength. But guess what? There's also a small cross on the front. This shows that people back then believed in both old gods and the new Christian god. It's like mixing two favorite things! The helmet might have been worn for fighting, but it was also so fancy, it could have been used for special ceremonies too.
A Story from a Famous Poem!
Did you know that a famous old poem called Beowulf talks about helmets with boars on them? It says warriors wore them when they fought bravely. The poem even describes swords knocking the boar crests right off helmets in battle! This helmet helps us imagine what those brave Anglo-Saxon warriors looked like and the stories they lived.
