Key Facts
Who Lives on the Ocean Floor?
Imagine a secret city at the bottom of the sea, or even at the bottom of a lake! That's where the benthos live. They are all the plants and animals that make their home on, in, or very near the ground under the water. This can be in shallow puddles left by the tide, or way, way down in the super dark, deep ocean. It's like a whole different world down there!
Dinner Time in the Deep!
In the super deep parts of the ocean, it's too dark for plants to grow. So, how do the benthos eat? They get their food from above! Tiny bits of dead plants and animals float down from the sunny parts of the water. The benthos creatures are like nature's clean-up crew, munching on this fallen food. Many of them are scavengers, which means they eat things that are already dead.
Squished or Floating Free?
Living deep underwater means dealing with a LOT of pressure. Think about how heavy a stack of books feels – now imagine that feeling all around you, all the time! Some benthos creatures are built tough to handle this pressure. If they were brought up to the surface, they might not be able to survive because the pressure is so much less. It's like a fish gasping for air!
Benthos Buddies Everywhere!
Benthos aren't just in the giant oceans. They can be found at the bottom of rivers, lakes, and streams too! So, next time you're near a pond or a beach, remember that there's a whole community of life living right under the surface, busy with their underwater lives. They are an important part of every watery home.
