Who Was This Building Wizard?

Imagine someone who could draw buildings that looked super cool and were also really useful! That was Benjamin F. McAdoo.

He was an architect, which means he was like a building artist and planner. He loved making buildings that looked modern and fit in with the beautiful nature of the Pacific Northwest, like forests and mountains. He designed houses, places for people to gather, and shops.

He was the first African-American architect to get a special license in Washington state, which is a HUGE deal!

From California Dreams to Seattle Designs!

Benjamin F. McAdoo was born in sunny California. When he was a kid, he saw the amazing buildings made by another architect named Paul R.

Williams and thought, 'Wow, I want to do that!' So, he studied hard to become an architect. After school, he moved to Seattle, Washington, and became the very first African-American architect licensed there. He started by designing smaller things, but soon people noticed his talent and asked him to design whole houses and buildings for them.

It was like his drawings came to life!

Designing Homes for Everyone!

Benjamin F. McAdoo didn't just design fancy houses. He also cared a lot about making sure everyone had a nice place to live.

He designed lots of homes and apartments for people who didn't have a lot of money. He even designed about eighty 'Houses of Merit,' which were special homes that were really well-built and affordable. He even went to Jamaica to help design special modular houses there!

He wanted to make the world a better place, one building at a time.

More Than Just Buildings!

Benjamin F. McAdoo was a busy man! Besides designing buildings, he also cared about his community.

He was part of the NAACP, which works for fairness and equality. He even had his own radio show where he talked about important issues. He even tried to become a leader in his state government by running for a seat in the Washington House of Representatives!

He showed that you can be creative and also make a big difference in the world.
